Hello all, I want to tell you about another kind of performer that we haven’t featured yet! Meet Adam Carlson, or as some of you may know him better as, JellyBean! As you probably guessed, Adam is a rodeo clown / entertainer. Adam had always had a dream to perform in front of the a live rodeo audience to entertain everyone. In 2011 Adam decided to follow that dream, and JellyBean was born. Adam suspected getting a foot in the door, and getting to be a recognized, regularly performing rodeo clown would be tough. Adam had no experience in the rodeo arena at that time, so he auditioned for and received a part in a western stunt show to gain some experience in front of a live crowd.
This show was a perfect way for Adam to get a foot in the door, and he was able to network with a couple of bull riding producers to see what they looked for in a funnyman. During that time Adam was fortunate enough to meet Randy “Slipknot” Schiedler a couple of times, and received some priceless advice from him. In the winter of 2011 Adam worked hard, and created 4 acts, made a promotion DVD, and sent it to anyone he could find in the rodeo production business.
By the summer of 2012, Adam got some gigs performing throughout North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Ever since then things for JellyBean have only gotten bigger and better. Adam has been able to work many different shows, as close to him as Brainered, MN. all the way down to Missouri! To date Adam has created 6 different acts, and has worked alongside some very talented announcers, producers, stock contractors, and committees. JellyBean enjoys being able to pull into a town, and know that he gets to go out, be crazy, have fun, and make people laugh.
As with most things in rodeo, being a rodeo clown takes a lot more hard work and dedication that people realize. It can be a hot, sweaty, dangerous job, but is one that he feels is more than worth it to make people have fun, and for the rush!Adam feels fortunate that he was selected by the Minnesota High School Rodeo finals, the Midwest Bull Riders Association finals, the Rice Bull Riidng Glory Bound tour finals, and the Wojo Rodeo Circuit Finals. Adam loves that he is able just to clown around, and live his dream
In Adam’s earlier years he competed in track and field from Junior High through his senior year in college. Being a former high jumper, and track athlete helps him bring a high energy to every show with an up beat tempo. When not wearing Baggies, and grease paint Adam is in front of an entirely different crowd as a health and physical education teacher. Adam is on his 15th year teaching, and coaching track at Aitkin High School. In order to stay sharp Adam brings out his inner JellyBean in class to create a fun learning environment for his students, and to help get his lessons to stick.
How he got to where he is:
There are many people who have helped Adam be successful in his dream of becoming a rodeo clown. Producers, contractor, organizations have all given him a chance, and encouragement along with announcers that have provided feedback and opportunities. Adam’s coworkers at the school have helped him with expertise in different areas from electronics and sewing, to building and makeup. Adam’s parents, siblings, in-laws, and extended family have helped him with his jokes, acts, marketing ideas, costuming, engineering advice, and have provided a lot of support to keep going.
Adam’s four children have been excited to be a part of the whole process, and have watched countless practice acts at home, and have followed him around to many events. Lastly Adam wanted to thank his wife Ava. She has supported, and helped Adam, and been there for him one hundred and ten percent! Ava is Adam’s creative consultant, travel partner, cheerleader, sounding board, and photographer, just to name a few of the many things she does for him.
When Adam is not working at chasing his rodeo dream, or teaching, he is with his wife and kids. They enjoy horseback riding, going to his kids’ school activities, working on house projects, playing on the lake, and just flat-out relaxing.
